Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Will these stay connected to both my phone and laptop?
Sony's WF-1000XM5 Help Guide documents two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, playback switching without reconnecting, and call standby for two phones. Music comes from the device used last; the guide does not describe mixing two streams. A third connection displaces one of the first pair. It does not specify codec behavior for every two-device setup, so this assessment does not claim that LDAC and multipoint work together in one plan.
Explore this need in the finder →How long does Sony list music playback with ANC on?
Sony's model-specific operating-time table gives up to eight hours for SBC or AAC, five hours for LDAC and seven hours for LC3 with noise cancelling active. These are different connection arrangements and published maxima, not an observed runtime guarantee. Equalizer, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat, voice activation and other settings can shorten the time.
Explore this need in the finder →What should I check about the foam tips and fit?
The US specification lists the closed design, and Sony's Help Guide identifies four supplied noise-isolation tip sizes (SS, S, M and L; M is attached at purchase). Sony says a poor tip fit can affect touch controls, sound, cancellation and calls; the best size can differ between ears. The tips are consumables, so check that a new or used offer includes the correct kit and inspect seller return terms before making fit a deciding factor.
Explore this need in the finder →Does IPX4 protect the charging case too?
No. Sony says the WF-1000XM5 earbuds are IPX4-equivalent but the charging case is not water resistant, and the headset must not be used in water. Sony also warns not to charge damp earbuds or a damp case: dry them at room temperature and clean the charging contacts before charging.
Explore this need in the finder →The WF-1000XM5/B is the black US configuration of Sony’s sealed, true-wireless noise-canceling earbuds. Its practical mix is ear-tip isolation, active noise cancellation, several Bluetooth codec routes, two-device switching and a Qi-compatible case. The real questions are whether its tips fit, whether your source supports the mode you want, and how much ANC listening time you need.
This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on review. I did not wear the earbuds, listen to them, test cancellation or calls, or measure battery life. The discussion below interprets Sony’s US product and specification pages and the model-specific Help Guide; promotional performance language remains Sony’s claim rather than an independent finding.
The seal is a practical requirement, not a cosmetic detail
Sony identifies the headphone type as closed and directs users to place the ear-tip into the canal. The Help Guide lists SS, S, M and L noise-isolation tips, with M attached, and notes the best size may differ between ears. Sony ties poor tip fit to noise cancellation, sound, touch operation and call performance. That makes fit important but leaves comfort and seal quality for the listener to establish.
The foam tips are consumable. For an open-box offer, check that the sizes you need are present, inspect for damage and read the return terms. A person who dislikes a canal-sealing tip should consider an open design rather than expect this model to feel open.
Published battery time depends on the codec
The maximum changes with codec. Sony lists up to eight hours of music with ANC on for SBC or AAC, five for LDAC and seven for LC3. With ANC off, the corresponding maxima are 12, eight and 11 hours. Settings such as equalization, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat and voice activation can shorten them. Calls are a separate case: Sony lists up to six hours with ANC or ambient mode active and seven with both off.
If you need five hours with LDAC, use that codec’s figure—not the general eight-hour claim. These are manufacturer maxima, not a guarantee for your device, volume or aging battery.
Codec choice also depends on the source device
The Help Guide separates SBC, AAC and LDAC over Classic Audio from LC3 over LE Audio. The source phone or computer must support the route, and Sony’s LE Audio setup uses the Sound Connect app with a compatible Android host. These are alternative arrangements, not one combined mode.
Sony also documents multipoint: connect two sources and switch playback without reconnecting. Two phones can remain ready for calls; music comes from the last-used source, and a third connection displaces one of the pair. Since the model instructions do not establish every codec/multipoint combination, this assessment does not match LDAC and two-device use as one verified plan.
Charging is more flexible than the moisture rating
The included case supports USB and Qi wireless charging. Sony says to close the case and align it logo-up on a Qi-compliant pad; a cover or metal accessory can interfere. The pad is separate, and not every charger/cover combination is established by the source.
For water, Sony gives the earbud units an IPX4-equivalent rating but says the case is not water resistant. The guide excludes immersion, seawater, pool water and soapy liquids; dry parts and contacts before charging. IPX4 is not a swimming or case rating.
Where this assessment fits—and where it stops
This model merits consideration when sealed in-ear ANC, app controls, codec choice, multipoint or a wireless case are priorities. The documentation cannot determine cancellation strength, call clarity or long-session comfort for a particular person. Sony’s “best” language is not an independent test result.
Compared with Sony’s WF-1000XM6/B, the reviewed documents show substantial overlap: a closed fit, IPX4-rated earbuds, an unrated case, ANC, Qi charging, Bluetooth 5.3, four listed codecs, multipoint and the same codec-specific music maxima. The US specs list different case weights; those are manufacturer figures, not measurements here. The separate comparison guide discusses confirmed changes without guessing at sound or comfort.
Checks before choosing the black US version
- Match the black retail model WF-1000XM5/B and confirm the case, cable, four tip sizes and documentation are included.
- Check that your phone or computer supports the intended codec and connection mode; the earbud specification alone is not enough.
- For multipoint, confirm both hosts and the switching routine you need; the documented arrangement is not two music streams at once.
- Use the return period to check each ear’s tip size, seal and comfort; inspect tips for wear if the offer is not factory-sealed.
- Keep water claims limited to the earbuds, and make sure the case and charging contacts are dry before USB or Qi charging.
- Check current seller, warranty, return and Sony safety information; this review does not establish seller packaging or present recall status.
Other documented finishes
Sony’s US product pages identify Silver WF-1000XM5/S and Smoky Pink WF-1000XM5/P. The two photos below are linked to listings for those exact finishes. They are appearance references only: neither image establishes what is in the retail package or a finish-dependent performance difference. The technical assessment above remains tied to Sony’s US specifications and the model-specific help guide.

Exact finish identity is shown on Sony’s US Silver and Smoky Pink product pages. Matching appearance listings were inspected at Best Buy for Silver and Smoky Pink.
Bottom line: Sony’s documentation makes the WF-1000XM5/B a flexible sealed-ANC configuration on paper, with a useful spread of single-device codec options and a separate two-device arrangement. The useful tradeoff is clarity: battery time falls with higher-bandwidth modes, the tip seal is personal, the case lacks water protection, and the documents do not justify merging every codec with multipoint. That is enough to make an informed shortlist decision, but not a personal performance verdict.
