Sony LinkBuds S x Olivia Rodrigo (Violet Marble) review

Sony’s limited U.S. LinkBuds S x Olivia Rodrigo edition retains the family’s documented sealed ANC, codec and separate operating modes, and adds two creator-tuned album equalizers accessed through Sony’s app. Availability of the special profiles after app changes, reset or resale remains unverified.

A useful fit for

Sony identifies this limited edition as based on LinkBuds S and its family guide describes a closed in-ear tip fit, with a tip inserted into the canal and rotated into place. The family package list names SS, S, M and LL tips with M attached; the exact Violet retail-box contents and personal fit remain unverified.

The main tradeoff

The edition adds two album-oriented custom EQ profiles documented at launch, but Sony does not establish their persistence after app changes, initialization or resale. Shared-family ANC-on music maxima are separate by codec (6 h SBC, 6 h AAC, 3.5 h LDAC and 5.5 h LC3) and Sony warns EQ and other settings can shorten playback. The earlier U.S. Violet listing was unavailable new at the observed retailer; this is not a stock or resale-quality claim.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What does the Olivia Rodrigo edition add beyond its violet finish?

Sony’s 2023 U.S. announcement describes two special equalizers tuned by Olivia Rodrigo and producer Daniel Nigro for GUTS and SOUR. It says they are accessed in the Sony | Headphones Connect app. Sony Australia’s release footnote specified app version 10.1.1 or later at launch. The announcement does not publish EQ curves or show that those presets remain accessible after an app change, factory initialization or resale, so verify them on the exact unit rather than treating the old feature description as proof of present access.

How long is an ANC-on session with LDAC on this family?

The LinkBuds S model-family guide gives a 3.5-hour maximum for ANC-on LDAC music playback, separate from the six-hour SBC/AAC and 5.5-hour LC3 maxima. LDAC needs a compatible source plus Sony app sound-quality priority, while Sony warns that EQ and other settings can shorten runtime; a profile choice is not a battery guarantee.

Can I use the LC3 connection and two Bluetooth device connections at once?

No combined plan is documented for LinkBuds S. Sony describes LC3 in the LE Audio mode and two-device connections as Classic Bluetooth multipoint; its app guide marks multipoint unavailable during LE Audio. The mode-specific match does not establish simultaneous mixed audio, and no multipoint runtime is specified.

This assessment is for the limited LinkBuds S x Olivia Rodrigo edition sold in the U.S. as model WFLS900N/V, Best Buy item 6562135. Sony describes it as based on LinkBuds S but adds two named-in-purpose equalizer profiles prepared with Olivia Rodrigo and producer Daniel Nigro for the albums GUTS and SOUR, plus an individual violet-marble finish. That makes this more than a finish-only version in the review library. It is still an earlier-product reference: Best Buy’s exact listing said it was no longer available new when checked, which does not establish that no new or resale offer exists anywhere.

The special feature is an app preset, not an objective sound verdict

Sony’s U.S. announcement says both special EQs are accessed through the Sony | Headphones Connect app and can be used with music from any streaming service. Its regional Australian announcement specifies Headphones Connect version 10.1.1 or later at launch. Those statements establish a product-era app feature; they do not reveal the EQ curves or prove the profiles will suit your ears, your whole library, or a particular mastering. “Tuned for an album” describes the artists’ intended profile, not a measured fidelity result. Sony’s guide warns that equalizer menus vary by model.

There is an important longevity question for an older listing. Sony’s current U.S. support page for the LinkBuds S family lists a Sound Connect app release and firmware version 4.3.1, but it does not document whether the two Rodrigo profiles remain available for this exact Violet model after an app change, initialization, account change, firmware update or resale. Sony’s LinkBuds S initialization instructions say initialization restores factory settings and removes pairings, but do not specifically say what happens to these creator presets. Before treating them as a reason to buy, pair the exact unit, open its sound settings and confirm the profiles are present and usable on your phone; ask the seller to demonstrate, rather than relying on an old product description.

It is still a sealed, ANC LinkBuds S arrangement

Sony calls the edition a LinkBuds S based product and describes it with the family’s noise cancellation and ambient sound features. The model-family help guide describes an in-canal tip fit: insert the tip and rotate the earbud into position. It lists SS, S, M and LL hybrid-silicone tip pairs, with M attached and no L size in the original package list. A seller’s used box may not contain those parts. Neither that fitting instruction nor Sony’s claim of a small design predicts comfort, a dependable seal or cancellation quality for an individual ear; check fit during any return period. The IPX4 statement is for the earbuds only. Sony says the case is not water resistant, and wet earbuds or contacts should be dry before charging.

Codec choice changes the published ANC-on ceiling

The LinkBuds S guide separates its maximum music time by connection and codec. With ANC on, its table gives six hours for SBC, six for AAC, 3.5 for LDAC and 5.5 for LC3. These are separate manufacturer test conditions, not results from this review or guarantees for an older battery. Sony warns that settings including the equalizer, DSEE Extreme and automatic features can shorten use time. The artist profiles therefore should not be treated as a way to keep the table’s maximum in every real listening session.

LDAC is a Classic Audio route requiring a compatible source and Sony’s sound-quality-priority setting; Sony says its stable-connection default does not play LDAC. LC3 uses the separate LE Audio connection, which needs an LE Audio-capable Android host and app setup. In contrast, LinkBuds S supports a Classic Bluetooth mode with two simultaneously connected devices, but Sony describes playback switching, not two streams mixed together. Its app guide marks multipoint unavailable during LE Audio. The LC3 plan and the two-device plan must not be combined, and Sony publishes no multipoint-specific battery figure. If the phone or app cannot use the intended mode, the higher-profile or longer-runtime headline does not solve that mismatch.

Package, charging and exact-edition checks

The shared family guide documents USB-C charging through the case and an included short USB-A-to-USB-C cable; it does not establish wireless charging for this exact Violet case, so I leave that capability unknown rather than infer it from a similarly named package. The edition announcement describes recycled and recovered material in parts of the body and case, and explains that the marble variation means no two patterns are exactly alike. The checked retailer image shows two Violet earbuds, not the case or full retail package, so it cannot prove the contents of a current seller’s box.

For a resale unit, match WFLS900N/V rather than the common WF-LS900N family name alone. Check the model marking, both earbuds, case, included tips, battery behavior, charging, pairing, current app support, seller condition and return terms. Also confirm the creator EQs in the app if that feature matters, and do not assume a firmware reset or a previous owner’s phone will preserve their availability.

Who should compare this edition

This is the most distinctive LinkBuds S reference for someone who specifically wants to audition Sony’s two Rodrigo-associated album presets along with the sealed ANC form. A practical comparison is the separately assessed Black LinkBuds S: Sony’s family manual supports the same broad fit, codec, charging and care questions, while the U.S. release identifies the creator presets as the special-edition addition. The available documents do not establish that the standard model has those named profiles, nor that every Violet seller’s app will still expose them. The Violet edition’s visual pattern, limited-edition status and artist affiliation are not performance scores. No listening, fit, cancellation, call, equalizer or battery test was performed for this assessment; use the original Sony U.S. announcement, LinkBuds S Help Guide and Sony U.S. support page to recheck details before purchase.
