Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is the 2016 Gear IconX an open-ear design?
No. Samsung presents ear tips and wing tips for the SM-R150, so the documented layout is a sealed in-ear design. Those accessory sizes do not predict an individual's seal or comfort.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the SM-R150 meet an active-noise-cancellation requirement?
The reviewed Samsung U.S. specification does not establish whether active noise cancellation is supported, and Samsung gives no ANC-on runtime here. It is left out of both ANC and no-ANC matches rather than assigning a value from silence.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the 2016 Gear IconX case charge wirelessly?
No. Samsung U.S. explicitly says wireless charging is not available for Gear IconX. The USB connector type for this 2016 case is not identified in the checked U.S. specification, so it is not classed as a USB-C-only wired case.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the U.S. SM-R150 specification establish SBC?
It lists Bluetooth 4.1 and supported music-file formats, but does not list Bluetooth audio codecs. File formats describe stored audio files, not which codec the Bluetooth host negotiates; SBC therefore remains unverified for this match.
Explore this need in the finder →Research-based assessment: This is the earlier U.S. Black Gear IconX SM-R150NZKAXAR, Samsung's first cord-free fitness earbud generation. It pairs Bluetooth listening with internal music storage and workout tracking. Samsung's U.S. launch table lists four gigabytes and up to 1,000 songs; Samsung's global product interview gives a short 1.6-hour smartphone-streaming maximum. I have not tested, worn, measured, owned or listened to this model, and no current used unit's battery health is known.
What the first-generation IconX is
Samsung U.S. positioned the Gear IconX as a true cord-free fitness product: each earbud can be used without a wire between the two sides, and its accelerometer, heart-rate sensor and touch surface support workout feedback and controls. Its built-in music player makes it more self-contained than an ordinary phone-dependent Bluetooth earbud. The U.S. spec table identifies 4 GB of internal memory and estimates that it can hold up to 1,000 songs; the song count is a manufacturer illustration, not a guarantee for every file size or music library.
The exact U.S. Black order code is SM-R150NZKAXAR. Blue SM-R150NZBAXAR and White SM-R150NZWAXAR are documented finish-only siblings; Samsung's official launch artwork shows the Black, Blue and White palette together. Their shared appearance in a press image does not prove that a resale listing contains a working, paired set, its charging case, or all original parts. Confirm the code and both earbuds individually.
Tip-and-wing fit, not open ear
This is a sealed-tip in-ear layout. Samsung's global first-look and setup materials list three ear-tip and three wingtip sizes, and the U.S. newsroom image shows the earbud body with an ear tip and stabilizing wing. Those options make the design adjustable, but they cannot predict a particular listener's seal, pressure, comfort, or ability to retain the earbuds during exercise. Ask the seller which tips and wings remain, examine the silicone condition, and confirm that each side stays in the ear during ordinary movement within a return period.
The manufacturer's U.S. table lists each earbud at 6.3 g and gives its body dimensions as 18.9 by 26.0 mm. Samsung's separate global interview says the design was intended for workouts and that the case recharges the buds during storage. These are product-description facts, not measurements or a fit verdict from this assessment.
Internal tracks help; streaming time is much shorter
The most consequential distinction is between playback from stored files and streaming over Bluetooth. Samsung's global product-team interview reports up to 3.8 hours in Standalone Mode but only 1.6 hours while streaming from a smartphone. The U.S. launch specifications do not give runtime figures, so the two numbers are clearly attributable to a separate Samsung global source. They are historical maximum claims, not laboratory results here, codec-specific values, or a prediction of what any eight-year-old battery can deliver.
The internal player may be useful if the intended routine is a downloaded playlist without a phone. But a daily commute or long listening session that depends on phone streaming is a poor fit for a cited 1.6-hour maximum even before aging. Ask for a demonstration of charging and playback from both earbuds and the case, not only a power-on light; old lithium-ion capacity can fall, and no published 2016 figure reveals a used unit's remaining runtime. The U.S. table lists 47 mAh per earbud and a 315 mAh case, but those capacities cannot substitute for testing the condition of an individual sale.
Bluetooth, files and workout expectations
Samsung U.S. lists Bluetooth 4.1 and Android 4.4 with at least 1.5 GB RAM as the historical compatibility floor. It also lists MP3, WMA v9, WAV, AAC and M4A as audio file formats. That list describes files the product can play; it does not say which Bluetooth codec is transmitted from a phone. Because the checked U.S. specifications do not name a codec, I do not count this product as an SBC, AAC, LDAC or LC3 Bluetooth-codec match. They also do not establish multipoint or two simultaneous source devices. Check a real host and the available setup software before relying on current app features.
The accelerometer and heart-rate sensor are described as fitness functions, not medical equipment. Samsung's original U.S. material discusses running feedback and workout tracking. It does not promise that the earbuds replace a dedicated sport watch, diagnose a health condition, or work with every phone app still available.
Charging and water limits need careful wording
The U.S. specification gives the charging case a battery capacity, but does not identify its charging-port type. Samsung U.S. support explicitly says wireless charging is not available for Gear IconX. The 2016 U.S. source describes P2i Nano Coating as splash resistant, but it supplies no IP code and does not clearly assign that language to the earbuds versus case. I therefore do not translate the coating into IPX4 or IP57, or claim the case is water resistant. Sweat or splashes should not be treated as permission to shower, swim or charge damp equipment.
Neither reviewed U.S. source clearly establishes whether active noise cancellation is supported or absent, and neither gives ANC-on runtime. The questionnaire matcher therefore leaves both ANC and no-ANC selections unresolved for this model. That is intentional: standalone music hours cannot be repurposed as ANC endurance, and a missing feature line is not proof of a negative.
Who should still investigate the SM-R150?
The 2016 IconX is a specific option for someone interested in a truly cord-free, sealed-tip fitness earbud with local music storage and a standalone playback mode. Its strongest limitation is also its age: the cited phone-streaming maximum was short even when new, while actual battery health, charging behavior, firmware access and remaining accessories are unknown. The 2018 Gear IconX is a separate generation with a larger stated memory arrangement and different Bluetooth, case and runtime evidence; see its Black SM-R140 assessment rather than carrying the newer specifications backward.
To compare this earlier sealed design with other assessed products under the same two confirmed choices, open the finder with earlier models included and sealed in-ear required. The result is an evidence filter, not confirmation of any seller's description, a current app path, a working battery, personal fit or condition.
Bottom line: The U.S. Black SM-R150 is unusual among older earbuds for its onboard music player and fitness sensors, but the manufacturer-cited Bluetooth-streaming runtime is only 1.6 hours. Its exact feature record still has meaningful unknowns: ANC status, Bluetooth codec, simultaneous device connections, case connector type and standard water rating. Samsung says the case does not charge wirelessly. Verify the Black U.S. model code, matching working earbuds and case, all required tips/wings, actual host/software, charging behavior, seller condition and return terms before considering an old unit.
Primary evidence: Samsung's U.S. 2016 launch and technical specifications; its U.S. availability announcement; Samsung Global's product-team runtime interview and fit overview; and Samsung U.S.'s wireless-charging guidance. U.S. finish/SKU identities are cross-checked through the Black, Blue and White model listings.
