Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro (Phantom Black) review

Earlier Samsung sealed in-ear earbuds with active noise cancellation, Ambient Sound and a Qi-capable case. Samsung's U.S. launch publishes up to five ANC-on music hours per earbud charge, without assigning that figure to a codec.

A useful fit for

An earlier option for comparing a sealed-tip Samsung design with documented ANC, Ambient Sound and Qi case charging. Samsung's fitting guidance cannot predict an individual's seal, comfort or cancellation result.

The main tradeoff

Samsung's five-hour ANC-on music figure is a codec-unspecified manufacturer maximum, not a used-battery promise; the case is outside the earbuds' IPX7 rating. Galaxy Auto Switch is host-dependent and does not document two simultaneous audio sources.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is the Galaxy Buds Pro SM-R190 a sealed in-ear model?

Yes. Samsung's North American manual says to attach an ear tip, choose a size that fits, insert the tips in the canal and rotate the buds to adjust them. That guidance is a setup step, not a guarantee that an individual gets a comfortable or stable seal.

Does Galaxy Buds Pro offer active noise cancellation?

Samsung documents ANC with two selectable levels, Ambient Sound and Voice Detect. The manual says ANC is available only while both earbuds are worn. The assessment does not claim a measured cancellation amount or that the mode makes every person, warning or announcement audible.

Does Galaxy Buds Pro reach a five-hour ANC-on minimum with a wireless-charging case?

Samsung's U.S. release publishes up to five music hours per earbud charge with ANC on and eighteen total using the case. It does not name an SBC, AAC or SSC-specific ANC duration, and case totals are recharge capacity rather than one continuous session. The exact used battery and seller package need separate checking.

Research-based assessment: Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro SM-R190, reviewed here in the U.S. Phantom Black configuration SM-R190NZKAXAR, is a sealed-tip true-wireless model with active noise cancellation, Ambient Sound and a Qi-capable case. Samsung's U.S. launch table gives up to five music hours per earbud charge with ANC on, but does not assign that figure to SBC, AAC or the Scalable codec. This is a source-based review, not a listening trial, fit test, ownership claim, measurement or report of current stock.

Sealed tips change the wearing choice

Galaxy Buds Pro uses a canal-tip shape, unlike the tip-free bean outline of Samsung's Buds Live. The North American manual says to attach an ear tip, choose a size that fits, insert it in the ear and rotate each bud to adjust. That explains how to try the fit, not whether these buds will stay put or feel comfortable in your ears. A manual's fitting directions cannot promise an individual seal.

The design difference matters because a loose seal can undermine the quieting people expect from ANC. Try both sides separately within the seller's return period. The fit guide distinguishes sealed style from personal fit; compare every earlier sealed-fit match.

ANC, Ambient Sound and voice detection

The U.S. launch specification lists two ANC levels and four Ambient Sound levels. Samsung also describes Voice Detect, which shifts toward ambient listening and lowers media volume when it hears the wearer speaking. The manual says ANC is available only when both earbuds are worn. These are documented controls, not a measured promise about how much noise disappears in a train, office or street, nor a guarantee that every warning will be heard.

Samsung lists three microphones, a Voice Pickup Unit, wind-shield technology and a two-way 11 mm woofer/6.5 mm tweeter. Those hardware specifications are not independent call or sound tests. See the ANC answer or run the same earlier sealed/ANC finder choices.

Five ANC-on hours is a ceiling, not a codec promise

Samsung's U.S. table says up to five music hours per earbud charge with ANC on and eighteen total with the case. With ANC off, it lists eight hours on the buds and twenty-eight total. The test note says the default settings had Bixby voice wake-up and Voice Detect off; actual runtime varies with settings, playback file, signal and use. These are manufacturer maxima, not results measured here or a forecast for an older battery.

The five-hour maximum meets a five-hour ANC threshold and not six. The case total represents recharge opportunities, not one uninterrupted session. Samsung does not publish an ANC duration for SBC, AAC or SSC specifically, so choosing a codec and a five-hour minimum together would combine facts Samsung has not paired in one operating plan. Read the runtime boundary, then compare the five-hour scenario with the same choices raised to six hours.

Codecs and Galaxy conveniences

The launch table names Bluetooth 5.0 and Samsung's Scalable codec, AAC and SBC. Samsung also describes Auto Switch between compatible Galaxy phones and tablets. Its example pauses a video on the tablet for a phone call, then returns the video to the earbuds: a sequential change of source, not evidence of two Bluetooth audio streams playing at once. The reviewed U.S. sources do not establish conventional two-device Multipoint, LDAC or LC3.

Some Samsung switching and immersive-audio conveniences depend on compatible Galaxy hardware, software and the same Samsung account; the feature footnotes warn availability varies by device and app. A codec list does not show what every host will negotiate, and does not make the five-hour ANC claim codec-specific. Compare the SBC and AAC answers, then verify the exact phone, tablet or computer you will use.

The case and water rating are separate

Samsung lists Qi-certified wireless case charging; the manual describes placing the case on a wireless charger or connecting a USB cable. That cable instruction does not establish USB-C for this exact U.S. configuration. Nor do the sources prove that a charging pad, wall adapter or cable is present in a particular used or open-box offer. Inspect the seller's actual contents.

The North American manual assigns IPX7 to the earbuds only: a laboratory submersion test in fresh water up to one meter for up to thirty minutes. It advises against beach or pool use, says the case is not water resistant and tells owners to dry wet buds and hands before handling. This is not the finder's IPX4/IP54-level buds-only option or IP57 on both buds and case.

Finishes, age and exact-offer checks

Samsung's U.S. release names Phantom Black, Phantom Silver and Phantom Violet. This review covers the Black function; Silver and Violet are retained as distinct exact U.S. finish rows with no source-backed functional differences. The photo shows the three finishes together, not the contents or condition of a seller carton. The 2021 launch specifications also cannot establish remaining capacity in an older battery.

  • Match SM-R190NZKAXAR for the reviewed Black U.S. model; verify any Silver or Violet suffix rather than assuming regional codes are interchangeable.
  • Try the sealed fit and check return terms; setup guidance is not a comfort guarantee.
  • Confirm the exact host, app and account before relying on Galaxy-specific Auto Switch.
  • Inspect the offer for case, tips, cable, seller condition, warranty and returns. A Qi-capable case does not mean a pad is included.

Bottom line: The original Galaxy Buds Pro is worth comparing when sealed tips, ANC and wireless case charging matter. The useful limits are equally clear: five ANC-on hours is not codec-specific, the IPX7 claim excludes the case, and Auto Switch is not documented Multipoint. This assessment does not imply current availability or tested performance.

Primary evidence: Samsung's U.S. Galaxy Buds Pro announcement and specification table and North American SM-R190 manual. Exact U.S. color/code identity cross-checks use the Black, Silver and Violet product records only; no customer or seller information is used.
