A useful fit for

A researched example for someone who prefers an untipped, open-ear layout but still wants an electronic ANC feature. Samsung describes a bean-shaped body, two wing-tip sizes and open-type ANC; neither feature description establishes personal comfort, secure retention or a sealed fit.

The main tradeoff

This is an earlier 2020 model, not a current-stock recommendation. Samsung's six-hour ANC-on maximum depends on Bixby Voice Wake-Up being off; the published combined ANC-and-Bixby figure is 5.5 hours. The IPX2 row does not define component coverage, the case rating is not established, and the six-hour runtime is not tied to SBC, AAC or Scalable Codec. Samsung-account device switching is not evidence of simultaneous Bluetooth multipoint. The image and review do not test present battery condition or seller package.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does Galaxy Buds Live seal the ear canal like a silicone-tip earbud?

No. Samsung describes a tip-less open-type design with two wing-tip sizes that rest against the ear. The wing is not a canal-sealing ear tip, and the shape may not fit or stay comfortable for every wearer.

What does the six-hour ANC figure require?

Samsung's U.S. specification lists up to six hours when ANC or Bixby Voice Wake-Up is on, 5.5 hours when both are on, and eight with both off. The six-hour ANC arrangement requires Bixby Voice Wake-Up off, and Samsung does not attach that runtime to an individual codec.

Can the charging case use a Qi pad?

Yes. Samsung identifies the case as Qi certified, and the SM-R180 manual describes placing the case on a wireless charger. A wall charging head is sold separately; verify the actual seller package and do not assume a charging pad is included.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does IPX2 mean the charging case or earbuds meet IPX4?

No such conclusion is documented. Samsung's U.S. spec table lists IPX2 without identifying which component it covers. The reviewed sources do not establish IPX4 or a case water rating, so do not treat this as an IPX4 or IP57 match.

Can I keep it connected to two Bluetooth audio sources at once?

Samsung's manual describes a Samsung-account feature for switching quickly among nearby devices. It does not document two simultaneously connected Bluetooth sources, so this review does not match a two-device multipoint requirement.

Research-based assessment: Samsung Galaxy Buds Live Mystic Red (SM-R180NZRAXAR) is an earlier U.S.-announced true-wireless model with a tip-less open fit, active noise cancellation and a Qi-capable case. Its combination is unusual: electronic ANC sits in an earbud that does not make a silicone-tip seal. Samsung's published maximum reaches six music hours with ANC when Bixby Voice Wake-Up is off; the combined ANC-and-Bixby mode is rated at five and a half. This is a source-based review, not a listening test, fit trial, measurement or claim about any seller's present stock or an older unit's remaining battery.

A bean-shaped body, not a canal-sealing tip

Samsung's product material describes a horizontal, tip-less body that rests in the ear, with two wing-tip sizes for support. The included wing pieces help locate the buds; they do not plug the canal like conventional silicone ear tips. The North American manual instructs the wearer to fit the upper and lower portions of the ear and choose the better of the two wings. That unusual placement is the main choice to consider before the feature list: it leaves the canal open, but it cannot provide the same physical seal as a tip that enters the canal.

Open does not mean one-size-fits-all. Ear shape, wing position and movement can change whether an earbud feels secure or becomes tiring. Samsung's fit illustrations and the product images show the design, not a test on a person's ears. If the shape is unfamiliar, confirm the seller's return terms before relying on it for long wear or exercise.

ANC without the usual sealed-ear fit

Galaxy Buds Live is not an ANC-free open earbud. Samsung explicitly lists active noise cancellation for its open-type design and describes it as reducing some background noise while leaving the listener able to hear voices and announcements. That is a product-design claim, not a guarantee that a particular listener will hear a train platform, a coworker or traffic clearly. There is no silicone seal to block sound passively, and no independent noise-reduction test was performed for this review.

Do not treat the feature label as a promise of quiet or situational safety. If a strong seal or passive isolation is essential, a sealed in-ear ANC model is a different type of solution; if you need an open canal, compare actual shapes rather than assuming the Live will sit like a hook, cuff, clip or ring. Samsung's 2024 Galaxy Buds3 is another open-type ANC design, but it is a separate product generation and has different fit and rating claims; see the Buds3 Silver assessment.

Six hours depends on the assistant setting

Samsung's U.S. specification separates three playback conditions. The earbuds are rated for up to six hours when ANC or Bixby Voice Wake-Up is enabled, 5.5 hours when both are enabled, and eight hours when both are disabled. The charging case adds up to 21 hours to the first condition, 20 to the both-on condition and 29 to the both-off condition. These are manufacturer maxima, not a promise of one continuous session or the present capacity of a used battery.

For an ANC-on plan that needs a six-hour published minimum, the relevant arrangement is ANC on with Bixby Voice Wake-Up off. Keeping both features enabled falls below six hours. Samsung does not publish separate ANC runtime figures for SBC, AAC and its Scalable Codec, so I keep the codec list separate from the six-hour plan. A matcher result for that floor means a documented arrangement exists; it is not a claim that every combination of settings will clear it.

Classic Audio codecs and Samsung device switching

The U.S. table lists Bluetooth 5.0 and Samsung Scalable Codec, AAC and SBC. It names Android 5.0 or later with at least 1.5 GB of RAM and iPhone 7 or later with iOS 10 or later. That establishes listed compatibility thresholds, not a guarantee for every computer, phone revision, application or updated operating system. Samsung account features and their app requirements should be checked against the device you actually plan to use.

The manual describes an account-linked feature that helps the buds switch among nearby devices without restarting pairing. That is not enough to claim two simultaneous Bluetooth audio connections. If you need conventional multipoint with two sources connected together, treat this model's support as undocumented and verify the behavior on the exact host rather than relying on the seamless-switch description.

Qi charging is useful; water and box contents need caution

The charging case supports Qi wireless charging as well as cable charging. The manual also describes wireless power sharing from certain Samsung phones. A Qi-capable case does not mean a charging pad is in a particular retail box. Samsung's manual says the wall charging head is sold separately, and the reviewed sources do not establish the connector type of the case, a pad in the box or what a current reseller will supply. Ask for the exact carton contents and confirm the case is included with a used or open-box pair.

Samsung's U.S. specification table lists IPX2 but does not say whether that rating applies to the earbuds, case or both. Do not convert it into an IPX4 earbuds-only claim or a water-rated-case claim. The manual warns against putting wet or dirty buds into the charger case, which is a separate care instruction. If IPX4 or IP57 is a firm requirement, this source record does not establish the required protection.

Who should still consider the earlier SM-R180?

The Mystic Red SM-R180NZRAXAR is worth comparing when an open ear canal, an electronic ANC mode and a wirelessly chargeable case matter more than a sealed fit or a recent model generation. Its fit layout differs from today's open hooks and cuffs, while its historical specification remains unusually clear about the ANC/Bixby runtime trade-off. It is not the safe choice for someone who needs a documented two-host multipoint mode, a case water rating, IPX4-or-better evidence, an included power adapter or guaranteed battery life from a used unit.

Before buying, identify the exact SM-R180 finish and inspect photos of the actual offer, because Samsung issued several colors and the images here establish appearance only. Confirm both earbuds, charging case and wing pieces are present, ask whether the battery holds an acceptable charge, check seller return and warranty conditions, and verify your phone supports the desired app and codec. The 2020 launch history is not evidence that a current listing is new, complete or available from Samsung.

Bottom line: Buds Live combines an open, wing-supported fit with ANC, Qi charging and a six-hour ANC maximum in the Bixby-off arrangement. Its unusual design can be relevant, but ANC does not turn an open earbud into a sealed one. Codec-specific runtime, simultaneous multipoint, component coverage for IPX2, the current seller carton and any used battery's condition are not established here.

Primary evidence: Samsung's U.S. launch and specification table, the exact Mystic Red U.S. product page, Samsung's North American English manual and its historical U.S. Red/Blue color announcement. Color images for Black, White, Bronze and Blue are from Samsung's Canadian or Spanish product pages and support appearance only, not U.S. package or availability claims.
