Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What does the wireless case add over the standard AirPods 5 case?
Apple identifies this version's earbuds as A3439/A3440/A3441 and its case as A3529. The case works with USB-C, Qi-certified chargers and Apple Watch chargers and includes a speaker used with Find My. The earbuds also have a force sensor with a volume swipe. Apple identifies the standard case separately as A3530 and says each case works only with its corresponding AirPods 5 version.
Explore this need in the finder →How much ANC runtime is published for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case?
Apple lists up to five hours on a single earbud charge with ANC enabled, up to seven hours with noise control off, and up to 22 hours with ANC when the case is included. Five minutes in the case is stated to provide around an hour of battery life. These are stated maximums, not measured results in this review.
Explore this need in the finder →Are these sealed earbuds because ANC is included?
No. Apple describes AirPods 5 as an open-ear design. ANC, Adaptive Audio and Transparency are listed, but the reviewed product does not use a sealed canal tip. A shopper who needs a sealed fit should not infer that from the presence of ANC.
Explore this need in the finder →Does IP57 mean I can swim with the earbuds or case?
No. Apple says both AirPods 5 and their cases have an IP57 rating for dust, sweat and water resistance, but it also says they are not waterproof or sweatproof and are not designed for swimming or showering. It recommends wiping after exposure and allowing them to dry for at least two hours before use or charging.
Explore this need in the finder →AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are the more feature-complete of Apple’s two new open-ear AirPods 5 configurations: the case can use USB-C, a Qi-certified charger or an Apple Watch charger, and Apple documents a built-in speaker for locating it. The same version also has a force sensor with volume swipe and a longer published battery claim than the standard USB-C-case model. This assessment uses Apple’s US technical, retail and support documentation; it is not a hands-on review.
This is desk research: I did not wear, charge, test or measure these AirPods. Their “up to” battery figures are Apple claims, and personal fit remains untested.
The open fit remains the first decision
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are still an open-ear design, not a sealed earbud with a silicone tip. Apple lists active noise cancellation, Adaptive Audio and Transparency, but an ANC feature does not make the fit sealed. People who want an unsealed feel may value that form factor; people who depend on passive isolation or a tip-canal seal should consider that a different design. Apple’s performance statements do not tell us how stable or comfortable these will feel in your ears during a commute, workout or long call.
Apple claims up to 1.5 times more cancellation than AirPods 4 with ANC, a manufacturer comparison rather than an independent test. An open fit may still let ambient sound reach the ear; the documents do not measure your cancellation experience. Treat the structure as a limitation if blocking outside sound is your priority.
The case changes charging, locating and controls
The included Wireless Charging Case is identified by Apple as model A3529; the paired earbuds use model numbers A3439, A3440 and A3441. Apple says this case works with USB-C, Qi-certified chargers and an Apple Watch charger, and has a speaker used with Find My. The standard AirPods 5 package instead has the A3530 USB-C Charging Case. Apple’s identification guidance says the two case models are not interchangeable with the other AirPods 5 variant, so check the exact bundle rather than treating “AirPods 5” as enough to identify the box.
This configuration’s force sensor adds a volume swipe: Apple describes swiping up or down on the stem, as well as pressing to control playback and calls. The speaker and wireless charging are case features; the volume swipe is an earbud-control difference. If you already have an Apple Watch or Qi charger in a convenient spot, the extra case route may reduce dependence on a cable. If you only use USB-C, the standard package documents that same wired connection without wireless charging.
One extra hour per charge, not an unlimited workday
Apple lists up to five hours per charge with ANC and seven with noise control off. With the case, its ANC-on total is up to 22 hours; five minutes in the case is stated to provide around an hour of battery life. The standard version is listed at four hours ANC-on, six with noise control off and 20 hours ANC-on with the case. These are maxima, not guarantees: calls, volume, settings and battery age can change results. Apple publishes no codec-specific runtime here, so verify any codec requirement instead of inferring it.
Both packages list USB-C charging, but Apple’s US buying page says the wireless-case package does not include a USB-C cable or power adapter. Wireless charging is therefore an additional supported option, not a claim that a charger comes in the box. Apple’s instructions specify centering the case flat on the Apple Watch charger; confirm the exact charger is compatible and keep the USB-C fallback available.
Water resistance still calls for drying and care
Apple assigns IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance to AirPods 5 and their cases, but says they are not waterproof or sweatproof and are not designed for swimming or showering. Resistance may diminish. After sweat or splashes, Apple recommends wiping them dry and waiting at least two hours before use or charging. IP57 is not permission to submerge the case.
Host support is broader than full feature parity
Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 and basic non-Apple Bluetooth use, but warns features may be limited; its non-Apple guide says Siri is unavailable. Its US setup page lists iOS 27 for iPhone pairing. Apple Account switching is not proof of generic multipoint. The checked sources name neither an audio codec nor simultaneous connections to two independent sources, so this review does not match either requirement. Verify current OS support for the features you need.
Check the exact version before choosing
- Confirm earbuds A3439/A3440/A3441 and Wireless Charging Case A3529; the standard USB-C case is a separate model and is not interchangeable.
- Verify that wireless charging, the locating speaker and volume swipe are worth more to you than the cable-only case option.
- Compare your routine with Apple’s five-hour ANC-on maximum per charge; it is one hour above the standard model’s stated maximum, not an independently tested result.
- Check the host device, OS, current feature availability and return terms. Codec and multipoint support are not established in the sources reviewed.
- Plan for a USB-C cable or a compatible wireless charger; no cable or power adapter is listed in the package.
- Keep the AirPods and case dry after exercise; IP57 does not make them swim-safe.
Bottom line: this version is the better paper fit when you want open-ear ANC plus wireless charging, a locating speaker and volume swipe. Its five-hour ANC maximum, host-dependent features and undocumented codec or multipoint remain important limits. The standard USB-C case may be enough if wireless charging is not needed.
