Apple AirPods 4 (USB-C Charging Case A3058) review

An earlier open-ear AirPods package with no documented ANC, up to five hours listening per charge, and a USB-C-only case.

Earlier model: Apple’s current AirPods 4 purchase route resolves to AirPods 5. This review helps identify the exact 2024 model or assess a specific offer; it does not establish current stock or seller condition.

A useful fit for

An earlier open-ear Bluetooth design for someone who does not require ANC or a wireless case charger. The case is USB-C only; the open fit and any current seller offer need individual checking.

The main tradeoff

The standard package has no documented ANC, Qi/Apple Watch charging or Find My case speaker. Apple publishes up to five hours on one charge and up to 30 hours with the case, but not codec or generic multipoint support.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does standard AirPods 4 include active noise cancellation?

No. Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio and Transparency for the separate AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation model, not standard AirPods 4. Both are open-ear designs, but only the ANC configuration documents active noise control.

What listening time does Apple publish for the standard package?

Apple lists up to five hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the standard USB-C case. Its test used 50-percent volume, purchased AAC tracks, Spatial Audio off and preproduction hardware/software. This is a manufacturer maximum, not an independent result or guarantee for your settings.

Can the A3058 case charge wirelessly?

No wireless charging is documented for standard AirPods 4. Apple identifies A3058 as the standard USB-C case; Qi and Apple Watch charging, plus a locating speaker, belong to the separate ANC case A3059. Apple says the case types are not interchangeable with the other AirPods 4 earbuds.

Will AirPods 4 provide two-device multipoint or a named codec?

The current Apple specification lists Bluetooth 5.3 and says AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, with feature limits. The reviewed sources do not name an audio codec or document two simultaneous source connections. Pairing by opening the case and double-tapping is a setup action, not proof of multipoint.

Apple AirPods 4 are an open-ear Bluetooth model with a USB-C case and no documented Active Noise Cancellation. The practical question is whether that simpler package fits better than the separate ANC version—not whether “open” automatically means comfortable or secure. This is a research-based assessment of the exact 2024 US configuration, not a wear, listening or battery test.

I did not use or measure these earbuds. Apple’s battery figures are maximum claims under stated conditions, and physical fit is personal.

A no-seal design without noise cancellation

Apple describes AirPods 4 as an open-ear design. The buds sit at the entrance of the ear without a silicone canal tip, which makes them structurally different from a sealed in-ear model. That may suit someone who dislikes a plugged sensation, but Apple’s product description cannot tell you whether this shape stays put in your own ears. If you need a tip seal for passive isolation, retention during movement, or a reliable barrier against surrounding sound, this is not that category of fit.

The standard AirPods 4 package does not include ANC. Apple’s comparison page separates it from AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and the standard model’s technical sheet lists no ANC, Adaptive Audio or Transparency mode. Do not infer that the H2 chip or Voice Isolation implies an ANC listening mode: Voice Isolation concerns call audio, not the way music playback cancels surrounding noise. The technical sheet and Apple’s 2024 introduction support the distinction.

USB-C case, but no wireless charging

The reviewed standard version pairs earbuds A3053, A3050 and A3054 with Charging Case A3058. Apple says the case charges through USB-C and identifies it as separate from the Wireless Charging Case supplied with the ANC version. Apple’s identification guide says the standard and ANC cases are compatible only with their corresponding AirPods 4 earbuds. A seller photo of white earbuds beside a case is not enough to establish that the package is the standard edition; match the tiny earbud and case model numbers when possible.

Apple lists up to five hours of listening on one charge and up to 30 hours with the case. The product sheet’s test note says Apple used preproduction equipment and software, 50-percent volume, purchased AAC tracks and Spatial Audio turned off; results depend on settings, environment and use. It also claims around one hour of listening from five minutes in the case. Those conditions matter when comparing it with the ANC package: “30 hours” is not a promise of 30 hours with noise cancellation, because this version does not have that function. A USB-C cable is sold separately, so check that your charging setup already includes a suitable cable.

Shared platform does not mean shared functions

AirPods 4 use Apple’s H2 headphone chip and Bluetooth 5.3. Apple lists Voice Isolation, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, stem force controls and Siri interactions. Their practical value depends on compatible devices, software and supported content; Apple warns that feature availability is limited when used as ordinary Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices or older Apple software. The quick-start sheet gives a double-tap-with-the-case-open pairing action, but that is a pairing step, not proof of two simultaneous Bluetooth source connections.

The reviewed model documents Bluetooth audio use, but Apple’s technical page does not identify an audio codec or say that the earbuds support generic multipoint. I leave both facts unknown rather than treating Apple Account switching as equivalent to standard two-device Bluetooth multipoint. If a specific phone, computer or codec is essential, check the intended host and test its current pairing behavior rather than relying on a brand-level assumption.

IP54 is a limited care claim

Apple gives AirPods 4 and their USB-C case an IP54 rating for dust, sweat and water resistance in non-water sports and exercise. The rating is not waterproofing: Apple says resistance can diminish with wear, advises against swimming or showering, and says not to charge the product while wet. After sweat or splashes, wipe the buds and case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not treat the case as a rugged outdoor accessory or test the rating by immersing it.

Who should compare this edition?

Consider this earlier configuration if an open-ear wearing layout and USB-C-only case charging are your priorities, and you do not need ANC or wireless charging. It is a poor fit for someone who requires verified noise cancellation, Qi or Apple Watch charging, an audible Find My case speaker, or an established codec or multipoint setup. Because Apple’s current AirPods 4 shopping route now resolves to AirPods 5, treat this page as a way to identify the older model or assess a specific seller offer—not as evidence that a particular new, sealed or warrantied unit is currently available.

  • Verify the AirPods 4 earbud family A3053/A3050/A3054 and its standard A3058 case; do not substitute the ANC earbuds or A3059 case.
  • Check the seller’s exact condition, return terms and included case; Apple does not list a USB-C charge cable in the package.
  • Try the open fit during ordinary movement within a return period; no retention or comfort test is implied here.
  • Confirm the intended host supports the functions you need. Codec support and generic multipoint are not established in the reviewed material.
  • Keep the IP54 instructions in view: no swimming or showering, and no charging while wet.

Bottom line: the standard AirPods 4 are the simpler open-ear version: H2 and current-generation call features, but no ANC, no wireless case charging and no documented generic multipoint or codec. The exact A3058 case is part of the model identity, not a minor accessory choice.
