A useful fit for

An earlier open-ear AirPods arrangement for someone who requires documented ANC and wants a Qi/Apple Watch-compatible case. Apple publishes a four-hour ANC per-charge maximum; personal fit and cancellation remain untested here.

The main tradeoff

The A3059 case adds wireless charging and a Find My speaker, but it is tied to the ANC earbuds and is not interchangeable with standard AirPods 4. Apple lists up to four hours with ANC, 20 total with ANC and the case, and no named codec or generic multipoint support.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can these open-ear AirPods use Active Noise Cancellation?

Yes. Apple lists ANC, Adaptive Audio and Transparency for this configuration. That confirms a documented listening mode, not independent cancellation performance or a sealed fit; the design remains open-ear and fit still needs an individual check.

How much ANC listening time does Apple claim?

Apple lists up to four hours per charge with ANC enabled and up to 20 hours with ANC using the case. With noise control off, it lists five hours per charge and 30 hours with the case. These figures depend on settings and test conditions and are not measured here.

What is different about the A3059 case?

Apple identifies A3059 as a USB-C Wireless Charging Case for AirPods 4 ANC. It also works with Apple Watch and Qi chargers and includes a speaker for Find My. The standard AirPods 4 A3058 case has no documented wireless charging or locating speaker and is not interchangeable with ANC earbuds.

Does Apple confirm codec support or standard multipoint?

Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 and limited Bluetooth headphone use with non-Apple or older Apple hosts, but the reviewed model specifications do not name an audio codec or confirm two simultaneous Bluetooth source connections. Verify the exact host and feature requirements.

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation keep Apple’s open-ear shape but add ANC, Adaptive Audio and Transparency plus a wireless-capable USB-C case. That makes the package a different product assessment from standard AirPods 4, not a color or bundle variant. This is a source-based review of the 2024 US configuration, not a listening, fit or battery test.

I did not wear or measure these earbuds. Apple’s battery figures are maximum claims under stated test conditions; they are not independent results or a prediction for a particular listener.

ANC in an open-ear housing

Apple says this design brings ANC to an open-ear fit. The earbuds do not use silicone tips to seal the ear canal, so do not assume the passive isolation or retention of a sealed in-ear model. Active noise cancellation is an actual documented mode here, unlike the standard AirPods 4, but its presence alone does not prove that it will cancel your environment effectively or that the buds will stay comfortable in your ears. Apple’s product comparison makes feature and battery claims; this review has no independent sound or cancellation measurements.

The ANC edition also lists Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. These are different functions, not synonyms: ANC attempts to reduce outside sound, while Transparency intentionally passes environmental audio through. The intended device, operating-system version, settings, firmware, app and region can affect feature availability. For a noisy commute, compare the documented mode with an actual fit opportunity rather than treating the feature name as a guarantee of quiet.

The case is the most consequential package difference

The exact US identification is earbuds A3056, A3055 and A3057 paired with Wireless Charging Case A3059. Apple says this case charges through USB-C, an Apple Watch charger or Qi, and includes a speaker for Find My. Its identification guide distinguishes it from standard AirPods 4 case A3058; each case works only with its matching AirPods 4 earbuds. For a used listing, verify the case and both earbud numbers instead of relying on “AirPods 4.”

Apple lists up to four hours of listening per charge with ANC on, five hours with noise control off, and up to 20 hours with ANC using the case. For noise control off, Apple lists up to 30 hours with the case. Five minutes in the case is described as providing around an hour of listening. The limits do not collapse into one all-day figure: the 20-hour total is the relevant manufacturer claim for ANC use, while the 30-hour total refers to noise control off. Apple’s test footnotes caution that settings, environment, volume and use affect battery life. The USB-C charge cable is sold separately, so check the existing cable and charger before treating the package as ready to use.

Connectivity and the boundaries of the claims

The technical specifications list Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple’s H2 chip. Apple says use with non-Apple devices or older software may have limited functionality. It does not name a codec or promise generic two-device multipoint. Automatic switching among supported Apple devices is different from simultaneous connections, so treat multipoint as unconfirmed if switching between a laptop and phone is essential.

The Quick Start Guide shows a case-open double-tap to pair another device; that is not evidence of simultaneous source connections. Bluetooth version alone does not identify codecs. Check current host and software requirements for Apple-specific spatial audio and voice features.

IP54 applies to the case too—but not to swimming

Apple’s support material assigns an IP54 rating to both AirPods 4 (ANC) and the included wireless charging case for dust, sweat and water resistance during non-water exercise. Apple warns that resistance is not permanent, the product is not waterproof or sweatproof, and it is not designed for swimming or showering. After heavy sweating or splashes, wipe the buds and case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and do not charge while wet. This is a care limit, not a license to submerge the case.

Who should compare the ANC package?

This earlier model is worth assessing if an open-ear design is preferred but ANC is still a required mode, and if Qi or Apple Watch case charging or the case speaker is useful. It is less compelling when a sealed fit is essential, when four hours of published ANC listening per charge is too short, or when a confirmed codec or multipoint setup is a hard requirement. Those are more informative tradeoffs than a broad “premium” label.

Apple’s current AirPods 4 buying URL now resolves to AirPods 5, even though Apple’s comparison and support pages continue to identify the 2024 ANC model. That makes this an earlier-model reference for checking a particular listing, not proof of current Apple-store stock or any third-party seller’s condition. Apple’s product materials do not expose a currently orderable SKU in the accessed route; use the earbud numbers A3056/A3055/A3057 and case A3059 to confirm the edition.

  • Check that the case is A3059 and the earbuds belong to the AirPods 4 ANC model-number family; the standard A3058 case is a different, non-wireless package.
  • Confirm your charger is Qi-, Apple Watch- or USB-C-compatible and that you have a cable; Apple lists the cable separately.
  • Compare the seller’s return and warranty terms. No fit trial, ANC evaluation or product testing is claimed here.
  • Check your own host, software and app requirements; neither a codec nor generic multipoint is established by the reviewed specifications.
  • Remember the IP54 care limits and keep all charging contacts dry.

Bottom line: AirPods 4 with ANC are not merely standard AirPods 4 in a more convenient case. The ANC mode, shorter published ANC runtime, Qi/Apple Watch charging and Find My speaker belong to the A3059 configuration. Confirm both the earbuds and case before comparing an older seller offer.
