How does the AirPods 3 MagSafe case charge?
Apple identifies case A2566 as compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers and able to align with MagSafe-compatible chargers; it also has a Lightning port. The separate Lightning Charging Case A2897 does not have those wireless routes.
Explore this need in the finder →Are the AirPods 3 MagSafe earbuds sealed or noise cancelling?
No. The AirPods 3 shell is open fit with no replaceable canal tip, and Apple does not list Active Noise Cancellation. Spatial Audio and Adaptive EQ do not substitute for ANC.
Explore this need in the finder →What battery figures apply to this case package?
Apple lists up to six hours per earbud charge, up to five hours with Personalized Spatial Audio, and up to 30 hours with the case. A five-minute charge is listed as around one hour. Actual time varies with settings and battery condition.
What moisture protection does the MagSafe case have?
Apple includes AirPods 3 and either case in its IPX4 sweat-and-water resistance statement. It is not a swimming or showering rating, and the equipment should be dried before charging.
AirPods (3rd generation) with the MagSafe Charging Case are the wireless-case edition of Apple’s 2021 open-fit earbuds. The third-generation earpieces are A2565/A2564 and the included case is A2566. This is a distinct package from AirPods 3 with the later Lightning Charging Case A2897, even though the earbuds are the same generation. The assessment is based on Apple’s product and support materials; I did not test, wear or measure this model.
Open design, without active noise cancellation
The AirPods 3 shell is contoured and short-stemmed, but it has no removable canal tip. That leaves the design structurally open rather than sealed. A person who dislikes the plugged feeling of silicone tips may wish to compare it, while anyone depending on passive isolation or a tip-seal for retention should look elsewhere. The shape is not a guarantee of comfort or stability; Apple’s general fit instructions recommend gently pressing and rotating the buds, but do not establish fit for every ear.
This model does not document Active Noise Cancellation. Adaptive EQ is an audio adjustment, not ANC, and Spatial Audio changes the presentation of compatible content rather than shutting out surrounding sound. The technical sheet lists the H1 chip, Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, force-sensor controls and “Hey Siri.” Those Apple features may be useful within a compatible ecosystem, but a non-Apple Bluetooth host may not expose all of them. Apple’s AirPods 3 specifications are the source for this distinction.
What A2566 adds
Apple’s identification guide names A2566 as the AirPods 3 MagSafe Charging Case and distinguishes it from the Lightning Charging Case A2897. A2566 charges by Lightning, works on a Qi-certified wireless charger and aligns magnetically with compatible MagSafe chargers. Those are three documented routes; “wireless” should not be mistaken for “no cable port.” This edition makes sense when a Qi pad or MagSafe alignment is a useful part of your routine. If cable-only charging is preferred, or wireless charging is unnecessary, compare the Lightning case version and verify the exact offer.
The package includes the AirPods, MagSafe Charging Case and Lightning-to-USB-C cable with documentation. No wall adapter is listed. The support page says the two AirPods 3 case versions are compatible with their corresponding earbuds, so do not assume a loose case or a bundled marketplace offer is interchangeable. Check the case model printed on the actual offer or follow Apple’s identification instructions when a listing uses only a generic product photo.
Battery and water claims
Apple publishes up to six hours of listening per earbud charge, or up to five hours with Personalized Spatial Audio enabled, and up to 30 hours total with the case. It lists a five-minute charge as providing around an hour of listening. These are manufacturer maximums that depend on settings, environment, battery condition and use. They are not independent measurements, and an earlier unit’s actual charge capacity cannot be predicted from its original specification.
Apple gives AirPods 3 and both included case types an IPX4 sweat-and-water resistance rating. The rating covers the case too, unlike products where only the buds are rated, but it is not waterproofing or a swimming/shower rating. Apple warns that resistance can wear down and advises wiping off moisture and allowing the case and earbuds to dry before storage or charging. Do not put wet earbuds on the MagSafe puck: the wireless charging feature does not override the care instructions.
Connectivity and feature boundaries
AirPods 3 use Bluetooth 5.0. Apple’s reviewed technical sheet does not state a general music codec or generic two-device Bluetooth multipoint. Apple Account switching across devices and supported Spatial Audio are different facts, so this guide does not infer that two arbitrary laptops or phones can stay connected concurrently. Apple supports using AirPods as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices but warns that functionality can be limited. If a codec, host app, low-latency mode or simultaneous-connection feature is essential, look for an explicit source for that exact arrangement rather than assuming a feature from another AirPods generation.
The main advantage over AirPods 2 is a feature and package set, not a different wearing category: force-sensor controls instead of double-tap controls, six rather than five advertised hours per charge, spatial audio and Adaptive EQ, and documented IPX4 coverage. Compared with the A2897 Lightning case model, the decisive change is case charging; the earbud capabilities and battery statement remain the same. Neither comparison makes a fit claim for your own ears.
Who should consider the MagSafe package?
It is a candidate for someone who wants the AirPods 3 open fit and no-ANC experience, prefers an IPX4-rated case and buds, and values Qi or MagSafe charging as well as Lightning. It is a poor match for anyone requiring ANC, a sealed tip, USB-C case input, a specific codec or confirmed generic multipoint. Because Apple now has newer AirPods generations, verify that the particular seller, condition, exact A2566 case and return policy make sense; this review makes no availability or value claim.
- Verify A2565/A2564 earbuds with A2566 MagSafe case; the A2897 version is Lightning-only.
- Make sure your pad is Qi-certified or MagSafe-compatible as appropriate; Lightning remains an alternative.
- Confirm the included Lightning-to-USB-C cable and your power source, since no wall adapter is listed.
- Keep moisture care separate from the IPX4 rating and let equipment dry before charging.
- Try the hard-shell open fit with your own ears; no comfort or listening test is claimed.
Bottom line: AirPods 3 with A2566 retain the generation’s open, non-ANC earbuds and six-hour published single-charge maximum while adding Qi, MagSafe alignment and Lightning case charging. Choose this package for the case’s charging flexibility, not for extra noise control or a different earbud fit.
