Ownership & care
Care for the earbuds, case and battery separately
Daily care is easier when you treat the earbud units, charging contacts, case and battery as different parts. A water rating for the earbuds does not cover the case. An app's battery-care option may help manage charging, but it cannot stop normal battery aging or promise a fixed lifespan.
Keep moisture out of charging
Sony's WF-1000XM6 instructions say not to charge when water, sweat or dirt is present at the earbud or case ports. After use, wipe moisture with a soft dry cloth and let the equipment dry at room temperature before charging. Sony warns against using the headset in water and says its charging case is not water resistant. The product's IPX4 rating applies to the earbud units.
Keep the ports and tips clean
Sony's maintenance guidance describes wiping dirt from openings carefully and not pushing debris deep inside. Remove tips only as the instructions direct, and avoid using solvents or tools that can damage the surface or opening. If you use replacement tips, check that they fit and that the case closes and charges with the earbuds seated.
Different ear shapes need different cleanup
The LinkBuds Clip uses a flexible cuff and optional Air Fitting Cushions; the LinkBuds Fit uses a sealed tip plus a supporter; the LinkBuds Open has a ring and fitting supporters. Their cleaning and drying steps are not interchangeable with the XM6 routine. Use each current model guide, and do not return wet earbuds to a dry case just because their earbud units have an IPX4 rating.
Understand battery-care settings
The Sound Connect guide lists Battery Care as an option intended to help extend battery lifespan. It also lists settings that can shorten available playback time, including equalizer, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat, Service Link and automatic ambient sound. The published maximum hours are operating-time figures, not a forecast of how many years a battery will last.
Charge on the pad with alignment in mind
Sony lists wireless charging with the case and cautions that charging may slow or stop when the case is misaligned. A case cover can affect the charging function. If wireless charging is unreliable, check alignment and try without the cover before assuming the earbuds are faulty.
